What Is a NIE, and Do You Need One?
A NIE is a unique identification number assigned to foreign nationals for tax and administrative purposes in Spain. You'll need one to buy property, sign contracts, pay taxes, register for utilities, take out insurance, or open a Spanish bank account — it's the starting point for almost everything else on this page.
Two Ways to Apply
- In Spain, at the immigration office (Oficina de Extranjería) or a designated police station, usually with an appointment booked in advance
- From abroad, through the Spanish consulate in your home country, before you travel
